This lecture addresses technological development – particularly the latest advancements in artificial intelligence, AI – and what it means for the left's analysis and politics under capitalism. We will draw on Marxist theory to understand how AI is not a neutral force or salvation, but an extension of capital's logic. Mats’ thesis is that AI accelerates capitalism's internal contradictions, creating the material conditions for the system's crisis, but that conscious class struggle is required to transform this into a socialist path forward.

To understand today's AI development, we must place it in a historical and system-critical context. Marxist theory has always analysed the dialectical relationship between technology and social structures. Yet, in Mats’ opinion the Scandinavian left has been underdeveloped in its analysis of the latest digital revolution.

Marx's critique of political economy remains relevant: capital's extraction of surplus value and its tool in the form of an advanced machine system, shape the digital transformation where AI plays a central role.

Participants can expect a lecture of about 45 – 60 minutes on the topic, which will be a development of the ideas Mats has written about in the Swedish magazine Clarté. After that we can have a general discussion about technology and AI. And what it means for the development of capitalism and the struggle for a post-capitalist society.

Mats Alexandersson have a mixed background. He has worked for 15 years as a metalworker, 30 years as an IT consultant and the last 5 years as a project developer for digital transformation in industry, which in practical terms means developing strategies for IT/OT/and other infrastructure.
